Driving in Qatar - Rules, Violations & Fines

Driving in Qatar can often be challenging for most expats; quite often, the obscure traffic code as well as the heavy traffic takes some time to get used to, with the addition of new traffic rules difficult to keep track of.
As it is one of the wealthiest countries in the Middle East with one of the largest supplies of crude oil and natural gas in the world, it comes as no surprise that most residents in the Qatar own at least one vehicle. This has now lead to an alarmingly increase traffic, in a country with only 2 million inhabitants and about 8,000 kilometers of roadways; as such, Qatar spends a large part of its budget on maintaining its (very modern) road networks.
